A former sailor a toxicologist, a sociologist all have something in common. Despite their various backgrounds, The Prostitutes converge to create, in their own words “Distortion Dancing, and Destruction”. Frontman Adrien Bell brings a indie rock sensability with  vocals often compared to Johnny Cash. While Bell performs baritone hypnosis, guitarist Martin Destroyer (Martin PĹ™ikryl), keyboard player Stevie LFO (Martin PĹ™evrátil) and drummer Luk Santiago (Lukáš PĹ™ikryl), and bassist Ĺ mity deliver the sound that has thus far made The Prostitutes Czech media  darlings. Formed in fall 2004, The Prostitutes continue to earn ctitical praise and a strong fan base.

In April of 2005, the band recorded their first EP with four tracks: Look into My Eyes, She’s a Monster, She’s a Prostitute and Sunshine.

In 2006 The Prostitutes enjoyed success amongst the Czech Media, to highlight just a few achievements:

Band of the Year – Filter magazine

Song of the Year (Sunshine) – Filter magazine (readers’ choice)

Best Video of the Year (Sunshine) – RGM Óčko Awards

3rd place in category Best New Act – Žebřík Awards

Nominee for Best Rock Band - RGM Óčko Awards

Nominee for Best New Act - RGM Óčko Awards

Nominee for Best New Act – Anděl Awards

In September 2006, the long awaited and self-produced album Get Me Out of Here is released. The music press goes very emotional, using outcries such as Album of the Year!, The Czechs needed a band like this! and Riot for Intellectuals. They classify it with marks 9/10 and 5/5.
A week on, the single track Sunshine reaches the top of the Radio Wave chart. Tracks from the album (Dont Give a Damn, Eject, Blue Friday, Shes Dead) enter the broadcast schemes of the majority of Czech Republic radios.
A tour of Spain is scheduled for November with the fabled Spanish indie band Catpeople.

In 2007, the band played around 60 gigs and became a concert sensation. The public proclamation of fictitious Summer of Love started a long line of gigs including all major summer festivals and autumn Distortion-Dancing-Destruction Tour which was prolonged until Spring 2008. The D-D-D Tour was preceded by the release of second single record, Don’t Give a Damn. Its success approved the strong position of the band.

2009 brings the latest installment of The Prostitutes story with Hometown Zombies releases a slightly edgier side reinforcing the orginal sound that is The Prostitutes. They were kind enough to send us a couple of tracks which we have provided on our latest podcast.

But hear the band at their best- live:

US President in the Czech Capital

April 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

Popular US president Barack Obama is bringing his message of change to Prague on April 5th.

Popular US president Barack Obama is bringing his message of change to Prague on April 5th.

Prague, April 1 (CTK) - U.S. President Barack Obama could give his public keynote speech in the Czech Foreign Ministry building instead of at the Hradcanske namesti square if weather were rainy on Sunday morning, diplomatic sources have told CTK Wednesday. Weather forecasts do not rule out showers.

Obama is to deliver the address, his first public speech in Europe since his inauguration as president in January, at the Hradcanske namesti square near Prague Castle at 10:00. The Foreign Ministry is seated in the Cernin Palace situated not far away.

The final decision is to be made on Friday.

Obama will give the speech after meeting his Czech counterpart Vaclav Klaus at Prague Castle, the Czech presidential seat. The Czech Prime Minister in resignation, Mirek Topolanek, will also be present. Afterwards Obama is to attend the EU-U.S. summit in Prague’s Congress Centre. Prague Police head Martin Cervicek told journalists Wednesday that all who will arrive at the Hradcanske square to hear Obama’s speech on Sunday will undergo a thorough check. The City Hall expects up to 30,000 people to turn up.

It is not sure whether people could listen to Obama speech on the spot if he had to make in Cernin Palace.

Cervicek also warned residents living along the Evropska street against opening windows and against any suspicious behaviour while the motorcade with Obama will be passing on its way from and to the airport.

Cars will be banned from stopping along Evropska street. Car traffic and people’s access will be partly restricted at certain places, mainly in the vicinity of Prague Castle and the Congress Centre, Cervicek said.

The U.S. embassy calls on visitors arriving in the square to carry as few items as possible. Luggage, umbrellas, banners, mobile phones, cameras, weapons, sprays, bottles, bicycles and other items, listed on http://czech.prague.usembassy.gov/obama.html, are banned. People must not bring in any pets with them either. The Prague Castle complex will remain partly open to tourists at the weekend. On Saturday, it will be open from 9:00 to 16:00, except for St Vitus Cathedral, which will close at noon. On Sunday, Prague Castle will be opened “as soon as technical conditions allow it” after Obama’s departure, presidential spokesman Radim Ochvat told CTK.

Obama is also to meet former Czechoslovak and later Czech president Vaclav Havel who has prepared a few gifts and a surprise for him.

“Vaclav Havel will really donate him several books he has written and a picture that will be a surprise,” Havel’s secretary Sabina Tancevova told CTK.

Obama will probably stay overnight in Hotel Hilton. He will continue from Prague to Turkey.

FebioFest Returns…

April 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

FEBIOFEST was founded in 1993 by FEBIO, an independent film and TV company. During the hard transition period from communism to democracy and market economy, FEBIO provided a working opportunity to almost all important Czech filmmakers including Vera Chytilova, Juraj Jakubisko, Jiri Menzel, Jan Jires, Jan Hrebejk and many others.

Starting as an enthusiastically organized, basically no-budget event for a couple of friends and film buffs, FEBIOFEST has grown during the past years into one of the largest film festivals in the Czech Republic, which nevertheless still maintains its original profile as an audience-friendly festival.

Situated in the new 12-screen multiplex cinema Village Cinemas Andel, FEBIOFEST guarantees excellent screening conditions for all formats, not to mention supreme comfort for festival-goers. The festival also uses two other unique venues: PONREPO Cinema (118 seats) for Czech Archive prints, and a special Video Auditorium (approx. 100 seats) whose location varies from year to year to bring selected films to a public space such as a train station or a church – for free.

When evening rolls around, FEBIOFEST transforms itself into the widely attended and increasingly popular FEBIOFEST MUSIC FESTIVAL, showcasing world music, jazz, blues, avant-garde and alternative rock concerts in the multiplex cinema garages.

To filmmakers and celebrities, FEBIOFEST offers a pleasant stay in Prague – the city of Kafka, beer and film buffs, at hotels conveniently located next to the festival cinema and close to the Czech capital’s magical Old Town.

In recent years, FEBIOFEST has hosted renowned directors and actors such as Claude Lelouch, Roman Polanski, Volker Schloendorff, Isztvan Szabo, Tsai Ming-Liang, Tom Tykwer, Hal Hartley, Andrey Konchalovski, Armin Mueller Stahl, Nikita Michalkov, Carlos Saura or Claudia Cardinale.

Basically the festival is oriented to full length films, bringing to Czech audiences the best of the last year, distribution premieres, retrospectives and tributes. It also discovers new territories and unknown filmmakers, and features special sections dedicated to gay and lesbian cinema, children’s films (FEBIO JUNIOR FESTIVAL), and even experimental films.

Thanks to its broad overview of the latest and best cinematography from around the world, high quality screenings and famous guests, every year the festival’s exceptional program draws large, curious and appreciative audiences of all ages and receives much critical acclaim in the press, not to mention the keen interest of local distributors.

FEBIOFEST is proud to announce that in 2008 it will begin co-operating closely with the newly founded Czech television channel FEBIO TV, which will offer special broadcasting slots for films from the festival program all year long (up to 80 titles per year)!

Based on the votes of more than a hundred Czech journalists, each year FEBIOFEST awards the prestigious KRISTIĂN, the Czech Critics’ Prize, in three categories: feature, documentary and animation films. The festival has recently added a Lifetime Achievement Award whose recipient is chosen by Czech audiences.

After the festival has completed its run in Prague, selected films (mostly distribution pre-premieres) travel to 8 other Czech cities to give movie lovers beyond the capital an opportunity to see high quality films. The spirit of FEBIOFEST even makes its way to neighboring Slovakia, where the Slovak FEBIOFEST is organized independently.
